Director, IIT, Guwahati, addressed Orientation 2017 at
USTM

USTM, 6th Sep, 17: The
University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM)
campus came alive as the orientation program for more
than 2000 new undergraduate and postgraduate students of
38 discipline commenced today, to benefit the freshers
who are about to experience a new phase in their life.
Prof Gautam Biswas, Director IITG and Prof NC Talukdar,
Director IASST, Guwahati were present to grace the
inaugural ceremony of the orientation program along with
Prof N K Choudhury, Former Vice Chancellor Gauhati
University and Principal Advisor ERDF, Chancellor, USTM
Shri Mahbubul Hoque and ProVice Chancellor Dr R K
Sharma.
The program was kicked off by the welcome address by Sh.
Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM and Chairman, ERD
Foundation who urged the students not to forget their
responsibility of being the torch-bearer of Social
Change, Economic Reform and for that they need to be
determined and dedicated to achieve their desired goals,
innovative ideas and entrepreneurial initiatives. He
said “USTM will never fall back on its promise of giving
you ample opportunity to excel in your academics”. We
have signed MoUs with various renowned institutions and
universities like JNU, JMI, NIPER Guwahati, NESAC,
CSIR-NIEST just because to get you exposed to a more
congenial ambience of studies, upgraded knowledge and
advance technologies- he added. Shri. M Hoque also
announced hundred scholarships for both UG and PG
students who aspires to qualify competitive exams both
at the state and central level.
After the welcome address as a token of encouragement
and keeping at par with USTM Pay-Back policy, four UGC
NET and CSIR-NET crackers - namely Khikeya Semy (MSc
Botany), Miss Moirangthem Veigyabati (MSc Zoology),
Tariat Matey(MSc Zoology) for clearing CSIR NET – JRF
and Lilika k Zhimomi (MA Rural Development) for clearing
UGC –NET, were paid back the entire amount of their
course fees.
The felicitation ceremony was followed by the address of
Prof. N C Talukder, Director, IASST who emphasized the
need to translate knowledge into action for the welfare
of the country, of the nation. Being overwhelmed by a
wide gathering of two thousand students, Prof. Talukder
congratulated the students for selecting USTM for
perusing their higher studies. He said that USTM has a
unique ambiance which will benefit the students to focus
more in the studies. Prof Talukdar appealed the students
to be sincere about their studies so that they can make
USTM proud as well as the region and the country.
Prof. Guatam Biswas, the Director, IIT Guwahati, the
Chief Guest of the program, had started his deliberation
by sensitizing the academic as well as students’
community to be on the track of excellence and
innovation. Through an enchanting power-point
presentation he took the entire audience to a journey of
scientific innovation as it started in different
historic periods, from Roman-Greek Civilization to
Industrial Revolution to Renaissance. While addressing
different issues related to innovation and research that
catalyses social development and economic reform, Prof.
Biswas stated that Indian Research work was always
necessitated by the civic requirements for the
development of nation and that we must follow the
footsteps of Indian eminent Nobel laureates and
scientists namely Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman,
Hargobind Khorana and Scientists like J C Bose whose
research innovations had revolutionized the science
syndrome as a whole. Prof Biswas also urged the students
to take maximum benefit from the wonderful
infrastructure provided by USTM.
It is worth mentioning that Shri Rajesh Jagasia,
Director Art of Living had spoken on the second session
of the orientation program which was a motivational
session followed by a session on Competitive Examination
by Mr Sailen Baishya, Joint Director, DCEP, USTM and a
session by Mr Dipankar Bhattacharjee, Soft Skill expert
for the newly admitted students.
The orientation for the newly admitted 2000 students
which will be going on for a week in different
departments which will witness the congregation of
galaxy of eminent academicians, researchers,
entrepreneurs and professionals from different
universities and institutes of repute.
