USTM conferred Honorary D.
Litt to Dr. Abdul Gafoor
University of Science and
Technology Meghalaya bestowed Honorary Doctorate
of Literature (HONORIS CAUSA) to Dr Abdul Gafoor, a
renowned pediatrician from the prestigious Trivandrum
Medical College in Kerala, India and medical
practitioner from UAE today at a gala ceremony of 3rd
Convocation 2017. The honor was conferred by Shri
Mahbubul Hoque, Hon’ble Chancellor, USTM and Chairman,
ERD Foundation in the presence of other dignitaries
namely Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar, Hon’ble VC, JNU, Prof.
Jayant M Modak, Dy. Director, IISC, Bangalore,Prof. G.D
Sharma, Hon’ble VC, Bilaspur University, Dr. P G Rao,
Hon'ble VC, USTM, Dr. R K Sharma, Pro -VC, USTM, Prof.
Amarjyoti Chaudhry, C V Raman Char Professor, USTM and
many other distinguished guests, intellectuals, academic
experts across North East.
Convocation 2017 heralded another journey for nine
hundred five (905) students who had passed out from USTM
obtaining PG, UG and PH.D degrees. A grand total of 905
students which includes 744 at the PG level, 161 at the
UG level and 2 Ph.D scholars had received degrees. 26
students had received gold medals out of which 17 at the
PG level and 9 at the UG level.
While explaining the purpose of conferring this honor to
Dr. Gafoor, Shri Mahbubul Hoque explained “ Dr. Gafoor
is working immensely for the uplift of the backward
rural class people both in India and UAE through his
philanthropic mission. University of Science and
Technology Meghalaya is working relentlessly for the
development of the NE Region by way of empowering the
downtrodden rural people through Education. So this is a
token gesture of our university’s recognition for his
commendable work”. Dr. Gafoor commented “this award will
give me more strength to work for the development of our
nation, for the downtrodden and NE Region specifically
which I want to explore now through USTM”.
Meanwhile, it can be mentioned that Dr. Gafoor after his
post-graduation from the Aligarh Muslim University,
worked for few years with the Ministry of Health, Oman
before moving to the UAE. In 1998, he started a private
clinic in Ajman with his wife Dr Rafeeka. He gradually
expanded his practice, Ibin Sina Medical Centre by
adding specialist colleagues in each department and
state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities. Now, the Ibin
Sina group has become the most popular private
ambulatory healthcare provider in Ajman with four
medical centres and five pharmacies. Ibin Sina is also
the pioneer in accredited CME programs within the
northern emirates in association with the Ministry of
In addition, he leads the Bright India Foundation, a
philanthropic arm working on the educational and
healthcare systems of the underprivileged in the
northern region of India. Dr. Abdul Gafoor has also
established the Woodlem Park Schools, an educational
establishment devoted to providing world class education
to children in India and the UAE.
