World Intellectual Property Day Celebrated at USTM

26th April, 2017: The Department of Library and Information Science, University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) has celebrated the World Intellectual Property Day under the theme of “Innovation – Improving Lives” on April 26, 2017 at the techno city , 9th mile campus. Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Professor & HOD, Dept. of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University and Dr. Manoj Kumar Rana, Assistant Librarian, Central Library, NEHU-Shillong, were present as the guest speakers on the occasion.
The aim of this year’s theme, “Innovation – Improving Lives”, is to explore how innovation is making our lives healthier, safer, and more comfortable, turning problems into progress. It is look at how the intellectual property system supports innovation by attracting investment, rewarding creators, encouraging them to develop their ideas, and ensuring that their new knowledge is freely available so that tomorrow’s innovators can build on today’s new technology.
While addressing the audience Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh emphasized on various factors of plagiarism and why it is important for those who are in academics to avoid and protect themselves from plagiarism. He urged the students to be careful while copying the reported documents without acknowledging the sources.
Dr. Manoj Rana in his address highlighted on the different published and non published matters which come under the copyright. He also emphasized on the visible, invisible innovations and issues with multiple examples. He said that every section of our society especially the academic fraternity to play the lead role to aware the society about the new innovations and creative ideas by our people.
Dr Amit Choudhury, Dean School of Business Sciences, USTM and Dr Ranjan Dutta Kalita, HoD Applied Biology stressed on the protection of creativity of different innovators through patent filing so that it cannot be copied and can be used exclusively for the benefit of our society.
Dr PG Rao, Vice Chancellor USTM, Pro Vice Chancellor Dr R K Sharma, senior professors, HoD’s, faculty members and students of the university were present at the event.
